Cheer 101

New to Competitive Cheer? Here's the Quick Version

All-star cheer has its own language. You don't need to know it all on day one, but here are the basics every new F3T family runs into first.

Tumbling

Running or standing skills performed across the floor, from rolls and cartwheels to walkovers and tucks.

Stunt

A skill where one or more bases lift and support a flyer in the air.

Flyer (Top Girl)

The athlete who is lifted to the top of a stunt group.

Base

The athlete(s) on the ground who lift and support the flyer.

Back Spot

The athlete positioned behind a stunt group to support and spot the flyer.

Basket Toss

A stunt where bases toss a flyer into the air using interlocked arms, then catch her on the way down.

Pyramid

A formation where multiple stunt groups connect together to build one larger stunt.

Round-Off

A cartwheel-style tumbling skill that changes direction, often used to start a tumbling pass.

Standing Tuck

A backflip performed from a standstill with the knees tucked to the chest.

Full-Up / Full

A tumbling or stunt skill that includes a full 360-degree twist.

Bid

An invitation earned at a competition to attend a higher-level event, such as The Summit or The Cheerleading Worlds.

Levels

A skill-based classification system (Level 1-6) that determines which skills a team may perform in competition.

Prep / Novice / Elite

Division categories that separate teams by skill level and competitive experience.

OTOFOG

F3T's own team philosophy: One Team, One Family, One Goal.

Competition 101

Competition-Ready Means Ready to Walk In

Experienced cheer parents know this already, so we like to say it early: competition-ready means head to toe ready, before your athlete ever walks through the door. It's not about rushing anyone. It's about knowing what to plan for so competition morning feels easy instead of stressful.

Head to Toe Ready

By the time your athlete arrives at the venue, they should already be:

  • Hair completely done
  • Hair piece / hair extensions installed, if required
  • Competition makeup completely done
  • Uniform completely on
  • All required uniform accessories on
  • Warm-up on
  • Cheer shoes on
  • Competition-ready from head to toe. Your athlete should not be getting ready once they arrive

Cheer shoe covers are allowed over cheer shoes to help keep competition shoes clean before your athlete takes the floor.

What Not to Wear

When your athlete is in their competition uniform, they should already be in their required cheer shoes. To keep the whole team looking polished and ready:

  • No Crocs
  • No slides
  • No casual shoes with the uniform
Plan Ahead

Parent Competition Morning Checklist

Competition mornings can require an early start, depending on your athlete's assigned meet time. If your athlete has an early check-in or meet time, plan to wake up early enough to have them completely ready before you leave for the venue.

The Night Before
  • ☐ Uniform packed and ready
  • ☐ Cheer shoes ready
  • ☐ Hair piece ready
  • ☐ Hair supplies ready
  • ☐ Makeup supplies ready
  • ☐ Bow / accessories ready
  • ☐ Warm-up ready
  • ☐ Water bottle ready
  • ☐ Competition bag packed
  • ☐ Check official F3T communication for arrival / check-in information
  • ☐ Set an alarm based on your athlete's required arrival time
The Morning Of
  • ☐ Hair completely finished
  • ☐ Hair piece installed
  • ☐ Makeup completely finished
  • ☐ Uniform completely on
  • ☐ Accessories on
  • ☐ Warm-up on
  • ☐ Cheer shoes on
  • ☐ No Crocs / slides
  • ☐ Water bottle packed
  • ☐ Athlete arrives ready to go

If your athlete has an early meet time, plan for an early morning.

We know competition mornings can be early, that's okay! F3T just asks that every athlete arrives prepared and ready for their team responsibilities, so plan ahead and get some extra rest the night before.

Athlete Essentials

General Practice Expectations

From the official F3T Gym Rules & Standard of Conduct.

Competition Day

Your athlete should arrive competition-ready, not halfway ready. Competition-ready means:

  • Hair done
  • Hair piece installed, if required
  • Makeup done
  • Uniform on
  • Warm-up on
  • Cheer shoes on
  • Required accessories on

Cheer shoe covers may be worn over cheer shoes to help protect them before your athlete takes the floor. Crocs, slides, slippers, and other casual footwear should not be worn with the competition uniform. Athletes should arrive in their required cheer shoes.

A friendly reminder: competition mornings may start earlier than a normal practice day. Check your team's official competition information and plan enough time to get your athlete completely ready before leaving home.

No. F3T welcomes athletes of all skill levels. Team placement is based on age, ability, and skill level.

What is the difference between a Full-Year and Half-Year season?
+

Full-Year Teams: Commit to a longer competitive season. More competitions and potential travel, a higher time and commitment level, designed for athletes seeking an elite, competitive experience.

Half-Year Teams: A shorter season commitment, fewer competitions, great for athletes who want competitive cheer with a more flexible schedule or are new to the sport.

Our staff can help families decide which option is the best fit.

When does class availability open?

Class availability resets every Monday and classes are chosen based on athlete demand and skill level needs. Openings are announced through Instagram, our website, and in-gym communication. Spots are limited and filled on a first-come basis.

+

Yes. Practices are mandatory for all teams. Consistent attendance is critical to athlete safety, team progress, and routine success.

+

Excused absences (illness, emergencies, approved conflicts) must be communicated in advance. Unexcused absences will result in a strike being given to the athlete.

Multiple unexcused absences may affect athlete placement, stunting groups, and performance opportunities. Attendance expectations are in place to ensure fairness, accountability, and team success.

All-Star cheer is a competitive sport that requires dedication, teamwork, and commitment. F3T maintains high standards while fostering a supportive environment that helps athletes grow both on and off the mat.

Additional information about Booster Program participation, meetings, volunteer opportunities, fundraising, and expectations will be shared by F3T. If you have questions or would like to get involved, contact the F3T front office or Booster Program representatives.
